Learn word combinations

Words that have similar meanings are called "synonyms".

In the past, you may have tried learning lists of synonyms at the same time. For example, you might look at this list of words that are synonyms for "good":
acceptable

• amazing
• excellent
• exceptional
• fantastic
• favorable
• great
• marvelous
• nice
• pleasing
• positive
• satisfying
• super
• wonderful

The problem is, if you just memorize these words without any context, you're likely to mis-use them. So instead of learning the words by themselves, memorize the following combinations:

• unacceptable behavior
• an amazing story
• an excellent choice
• exceptional quality
• a fantastic job opportunity
• favorable weather conditions
• a great day
• a marvelous sense of humor
• a nice guy
• a pleasing voice
• a positive attitude
• a satisfying meal
• super strong
• have a wonderful time

To be clear, each of these words can be used in many other combinations than the ones listed above. You can even switch some of them. For example, you can say "a wonderful day" or "a fantastic day" instead of "a great day". But remembering similar words within phrases will help you to keep them separate in your mind.
