Using 'in'


The word in has a number of different uses in English. You probably know that in is a preposition, but did you also know that in also used as an adverb, an adjective, and even a noun? Today, let’s have a look at the various uses of this interesting little word.

Using 'the' with Superlatives


If we use a superlative adjective ('the tallest student in the class') then there is obviously only one (or one group) of the things we are talking about. There is one student who is the tallest in the class, and because it's clear to the listener which one we mean, we usually use 'the':
