The Olympics Vocabulary

A lot of people like to watch the Olympics. I do too. I like the winter Olympics more than the summer Olympics. My favorite Olympic sports are figure skating and downhill skiing. How about you?
Today, let’s have a look at some key vocabulary you will need to know to talk about the Olympics in English.
The word Olympics is used as a noun and is almost always used in the plural form. This is because the Olympics is a set of different games and events.
I like to watch the Olympics not, I like to watch the Olympic.
This year, the Winter Olympics are being held in Sochi, Russia.
Have you ever seen the Olympics live?
We use the word Olympic is an adjective and used before a noun:
Mao Asada is an Olympic figure skater.
The Olympic games are very exciting.
There are many Olympic athletes from all over the world.
When we talk about a sport, we generally used the gerund form (VerbING) if the sport is based on a verb. The noun form is used to talk about the equipment:
I like to watch figure skating.  Figure skating is the sport.
She is holding her figure skates. Figure skates are the equipment.
Snowboarding is a relatively new Olympic sport.
Jeff has a brand new snowboard.
