English Grammar: Useful Online Resources

When learning English, it’s vital to understand the building blocks of the language and that means getting to grips with its grammar. If you find old textbooks boring and are searching for something a bit more interactive, then why not study English grammar online? There are thousands of sites out there that provide information, explanations and exercises on English grammar but,
unfortunately, many are outdated, poorly maintained or simply provide incorrect information. Here, I’ve separated out some of the good apples from the bad.
My top 5 English grammar sites
Wikipedia
Always a good place to start. Here you can find a general overview of English grammar with a glossary of terms, explanations, examples and links to further reading. Defining what English grammar is and understanding the terms used to describe its constituent parts is important before we dig deeper.
Usingenglish.com
Comprehensive glossary of grammatical terms with short explanations and clear examples. Categories are well laid out and easy to search. If you are looking for a quick explanation of a given grammatical unit or construction then this site is for you.
British Council
Reliable grammar resources from a reputable British institution. This is the grammar section of a much larger site, which is also worth exploring. Here you will find topics on English grammar with clear explanations and interesting interactive flash exercises to test your skills.
University College London
Interactive online grammar course provided by University College London for its undergraduate students. Grammar modules are separated into logical sections with explanations and online exercises for you to complete. This course is aimed at native speakers of English and should test even the most advanced students. It also includes a useful searchable glossary of grammatical terms.
About.com
Grammar section of one of the largest and most popular reference sites on Google. It provides information on advanced grammar topics with explanations, examples and interactive exercises. Bear in mind that this is an American website so there may be very small differences in certain areas of grammar (i.e. the acceptable forms of the verb “get”).
