"graduated"

He Graduated High School?

It's graduation season, which means it's the time of year for me to do my annual duty of explaining how to use the word "graduated."
Although the "graduated high school " construction is becoming more common, most grammarians say it is incorrect. Here are the proper ways to use the verb "graduated":
  • A school does the act of graduating a student: Stanford graduated thousands of students this year.
  • Students are graduated from a school: Sandy graduated from Stanford.
  • If you want to be persnickety, you can also say a student was graduated
  •  from a school: Sandy was graduated from Stanford.
Congratulations to all the new graduates (and the schools that graduated them).
