Talk about ages

(Year Of English)

How can you describe a person's age group? Here are some useful words and phrases.
A baby is someone who was recently born and can't walk around on its own yet. Another word for a baby is infant, which seems just a little bit younger: think of a baby that can't crawl yet. You can also call a baby that is less than a couple of months old a newborn.
Once a person starts walking, you might start to call it a toddler. Toddlers can walk around and talk a little bit, though they can't express themselves fully and need a lot of supervision from adults.

The word child can include both babies and toddlers, but more often we use it to talk about someone who's able to speak in complete sentences but hasn't developed into a full adult yet. Older children from around age ten to thirteen are sometimes called pre-teens.

A person from age 13 to 19 is a teenager or teen. After a child starts to go through puberty (when a person starts to grow body hair) they can also be called an adolescent. When someone stops being an adolescent is less clear. You might even insult a 35-year-old man by calling him an adolescent if he doesn't act very mature.

The word kid is interesting. It mostly refers to children, but you can use it for teenagers too. But you can also use it for anyone who's quite a bit younger than you. So if you're 60 years old, you might call a 30-year-old a "kid".

Once a person starts to live as an adult, you can call them a young adult. This period lasts until a person's mid to late 20's, or until they start to do things like get married and have children. After that, they're simply an adult. Children also use the word grown-up to describe an adult.

Someone in their late 30s to early 50s can be called middle-aged. Most middle-aged people don't like this term very much.

After a person turns 65, they may be known as a senior citizen. A less polite term for older people is elderly. When you call someone elderly, it sounds like they're old and weak.
