put one’s foot in one’s mouth

Have you every done something embarrassing? Maybe you went to a party and saw someone you’ve met before, but couldn’t remember their name. That happens to me a lot. Or maybe you tried to say something in another language, but you said the wrong thing and everyone laughed.  Well, here is an idiom that you can use in this situation:

To put one’s foot in one’s mouth

Here are some examples on how to use this common English idiom:
  • put my foot in my mouth when I forgot Bob’s wife’s name.
  • Jack put his foot in his mouth at the party. Why did he get so drunk?
  • It’s easy to put your foot in your mouth when you practice a new language.
Have you recently put your foot in your mouth?
