Making Conversation
Introducing yourself
- I’m Sandra. How do you do?
- Hi, I’m Bob. It’s nice to meet
you.
- Hi. I don’t think I’ve met you before. I’m
Imogen.
- I don’t
think we’ve been introduced. I’m Nigel.
Initiating the conversation
- So, do you know anyone here?
- What line of work are you in?
- Where are you from, then?

On Paper
This is a great phrase that can be used in both spoken and written English. If something looks good “On paper” it means that all the information you have seems like the situation would be great. What is good “on paper” and what is good “in reality” are often 2 very different things. Here are 2 good examples.
