A linguistic view of the world
PROFESSOR:
People possess the same
physical organs for sensing the world: we have eyes for seeing, ears for hearing,
noses for smelling. But does everyone really sense the world in exactly
the same way? Two linguists, Edward Sapir and Benjamin Whorf, didn't think
so. Sapir and Whorf believed that people's perception of the world depends
very much on the language they speak. It's called the Sapir Whorf
hypothesis.

The art of communication
NEW AGER:
The
art of effective communication doesn't begin with talking, it begins with
listening. How often, during a conversation, have you realized that the person
you're talking to isn't really listening to what you say, but instead just
waiting for you to stop talking, so that they can start talking? Do you
know what I'm talking about? They don't make much eye contact, they
fidget, their body language is cold and uninterested in fact it seems they've
got something else on their mind. You see, listening isn't just something
you do with your ears it's something you do with your mind, your body and your
soul.

Communication and gender
NEW AGER:
Have you ever seen one of those nature shows
where you see males fighting in order to gain the upper hand or more simply
gain a mate? , and where the female of the species is looking after the
young? While many would acknowledge that every person is different, some
suggest that this basic pattern seems to carry over into the human species. Men
would compete against each other to win the women, and compete against nature
to win their dinner. For men, winning meant staying alive.

Young Guys Dating Older Chicks
I was just looking at some pictures of Demi Moore on Google images. She just turned 50! When she was young, she was arguably one of the hottest or best looking actresses in Hollywood.

Tough Call
In English, if something is a “tough call” it means it’s difficult or impossible to know what is the correct answer or opinion.
Some examples will help make this more clear: “I’m really not sure who is the better tennis player between Federer and Nadal. It’s a tough call“.
Some examples will help make this more clear: “I’m really not sure who is the better tennis player between Federer and Nadal. It’s a tough call“.
“He still loves his wife but they have a lot of problems. He’s not sure if they should stay together or get a divorce. It’s a really tough call.”
“Those two girls are both really hot. I’m not sure who I think is better looking. It’s a tough call“. I hope that helps!

Oxymoron
«Оксюморон» - с древнегреческого - «умная глупость».
Разумеется, такие словосочетания, есть и в русском языке.
Например, «звенящая тишина». Вообще-то тишина предполагает полное отсутствие каких-либо звуков. Как тогда она может звенеть? :)
Или вот ещё: «страшно красивая», «красноречивое молчание»…
Теперь давайте посмотрим, как выглядят «противоречивые» словосочетания в английском:
1. Found missing - найден недостающим, отсутствующим, пропавшим
