Telephoning in English

Here are some useful tips and phrases for making telephone calls in English.

Spelling on the phone

If you need to spell your name, or take the name of your caller, the biggest problem is often saying vowel sounds:
'a' is pronounced as in 'may'
'e' is pronounced as in 'email' or 'he'
'i' is pronounced as in 'I' or 'eye'
'o' is pronounced as in 'no'
'u' is pronounced as 'you'

Burns' Night or Burns' supper

Burns Night is annually celebrated in Scotland on or around January 25. It commemorates the life of the bard(poet) Robert Burns, who was born on January 25, 1759. The day also celebrates Burns' contribution to Scottish culture. Burns' best known work is "Auld Lang Syne".
