In English, an “eye opener” is some event or situation that makes you really think about things differently. An “eye opener” is an experience that gives you more knowledge and a deeper understanding about something. Some examples will really help to clear this up: I had no idea what China was really like before I travelled there. It was a real eye opening experience.
It’s a very different place than the western media portrays it. You should watch that new documentary I gave you about how difficult it is for poor people to get health care in the USA. It’s a real eye opener. There are many more poor people there than I thought. So, if you do something that gives you new information and an “improved” opinion or more educated attitude about something, you can say it was a real “eye opening experience” or a real “eye opener“
