Today I have a mini lesson for you about a common mistake.
I often hear students say 'she speaks English good'. This is not correct!
'Good' is an adjective. We use it before a noun or after a linking verb. We can say:
- She speaks good English. (Here 'good' is before the noun 'English').
- Her English is good. (Here 'good' is after the linking verb 'is').
'Well' is often an adverb. We use it to give more information about a verb. We usually use it at the end of the sentence or clause. We can say:
- She speaks English well.
We can't say 'she speaks well English'. This is not correct.
Let's try a little practice. Which one is correct? Answers at the end!
1) James speaks (good / well) German.
2) They play tennis (good / well).
3) She makes (good / well) pasta.
4) Her writing is (good / well).
5) Julie speaks Japanese (good / well).
(1: good / 2: well / 3: good / 4: good / 5: well)
